Shamsuddin Illius is a Bangladesh based print and online journalist specializing in climate change, environmental, refugees, and migration issues. His work has appeared in Agence France-Presse (AFP), The Third Pole, The Scotsman, Unbaise The News, Scroll.in, The Independent, The Business Standard and more. He was one of the fellows of the 2022 World Press Institute, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) Journalism Fellowship Scheme in 2018, and was a story grant fellow of EJN—reporting on zoonotic diseases in 2021, reporting on biodiversity in 2020, and reporting on climate change adaptation in the Bay of Bengal in 2019.
One of his stories got an honorable mention in the 2022 Covering Climate Now Award. He covered the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) from the ground in Glasgow in 2021 with the CCMP Fellowship by the Earth Journalism Network (EJN) and the Stanley Center for Peace and Security. In 2022, he worked on a cross-border investigation with six journalists from six different countries, ‘The Sinking Cities Project, that examined how sea-level rise is affecting major cities and how governments are responding to the consequences of the climate crisis.
He is a field journalist; he covers remote coastal areas of Bangladesh to report on people living there, their livelihoods, health, and education. He is currently working as the Bureau Chief- Chittagong at The Business Standard , a Dhaka based English daily. He also contributes to AFP and The Third Pole.
