Special Events

Our journalists work hard and they party hard. We’ll have a great line-up of special events where you can share drinks, brainstorm, get inspired, and dance the night away. Among the events we’re planning:

Welcome Reception

On Tuesday 19th (6pm to 8pm): Don’t miss our welcome reception, as we greet our guests from around the world. We’ll have an open bar and snacks for everyone and a warm welcome to the world’s most extraordinary journalists.

The Welcome Reception is hosted by Region Västra Götaland and The City of Gothenburg.

If you have food allergies or specific dietary restrictions, please complete this form and we will make sure to inform the venue.

Banquet and Awards Night

On Thursday 21st: Join us as the full conference gathers for a gala evening, starting with a 6pm reception, followed by a full banquet with entertainment. Next we will announce the winners of the Global Shining Light Award, honored for gutsy investigative reporting in developing and transitioning countries under duress or threat. And then comes the dancing… (Note: We have limited seating for this event, and we have now reached full capacity. New registrants who wish to attend will be added to a waitlist.)

The Muckrakers

On Wednesday 20th: If you’ve been to any of our last seven Global Conferences, chances are you’ve seen GIJN’s own band, The Muckrakers. Formed at a jam at the Lillehammer conference in 2008, the R&B group has gone on to play to packed crowds from around the world in Geneva, Kiev, Rio, a rockin’ reunion back in Lillehammer, and then great gigs in Joburg and Hamburg. The international band will feature most of the original cast — the incomparable Ana Simonovska on vocals (Macedonia), Mark Lee Hunter on slide guitar (France/US), Dave Kaplan on harmonica (US), and Freddy Schaal on drums (Norway).

Join us for The Muckrakers on Wednesday night from 9pm to 12am. For this fun night, we’ve booked the nearby Brewhouse, one of Gothenburg’s top night spots. Dubbed a “culture factory,” the Brewhouse features concerts, artistic acts, and films in a retro industrial space. Come early at 8pm when the doors open for drinks.
