Global Investigative Journalism Network
Development Director
Karen Martin is GIJN's Development Director. Karen studied journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, where she received her Master's Degree in Television, Radio & Film. After working in US television newsrooms and for several publications, she began using her writing skills to help NGOs tell their stories, in order to make the world a better place.
In her 20+ year career, she has helped raise $195 million for NGOs and nonprofit organizations that protect refugees worldwide, get people back to work, fight food insecurity, secure scholarships for motivated students, and provide safe spaces for abused and neglected children.
She also has worked at grant making organizations, where she learned the ins-and-outs of the entire grant cycle: funder conversations, proposals, site visits, decision-making, and follow-up reporting. She remains a consultant for a regional foundation, where she leads two grant writing workshops each year for the foundation’s applicants.
