Phil joined the BBC from university and during his 23-year career at the organisation won over a dozen international awards and has four BAFTA nominations.
Phil has presented or produced over 100 documentaries and reported on conflicts from Colombia to Cambodia, Belfast to Bilbao and India to Iraq.
His book Dining with Terrorists was published in 2005 and described by the Guardian as ‘outstanding’ and by Noam Chomsky as ‘an amazing tour de force’. According to The British Journalism Review, ‘This thoughtful, controversial book should be compulsory reading for every editor, journalist and politician – before it is too late’.
In 2013 he moved to Doha to help set up Al Jazeera’s newly formed Investigative Unit (I-Unit).
