We are in the midst of a decade-long global backlash against democracy and human rights. A new extremism has taken hold, characterized by radical right-wing groups and ultranationalist political movements. These groups are not only growing but are becoming more organized. International ties among them are also growing — digitally, ideologically, financially — but their networks are poorly understood and investigative journalism in this area is lacking. Here are three veteran journalists who have investigated the extremist right in different parts of the world. They will offer tips and tools on how to track and report on groups and individuals, with special attention to staying safe and working collaboratively and across borders with your colleagues.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. How to Spread Watchdog Journalism in Tough PlacesSustainability
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room H1 (250)
Media development -- using international aid to build and support independent media -- has embraced investigative journalism in a big way. Aid agencies, foundations, and nonprofit implementers now understand that a watchdog media is as essential to development as are good schools and sound economic policy. But how do you support investigative journalism in regimes that are autocratic and repressive? Even in more open societies, we have lost ground due to the global backlash against democracy and human rights.Fortunately, there are success stories, even in the toughest of places. The MacArthur Foundation's Amina Salihu will talk about the MacArthur Foundation's "Big Bet" on fighting corruption with journalists in one of the world's most corrupt countries, Nigeria. MRDI's Hasibur Rahman will explain how his MRDI, despite obstacles at every turn, helped create a culture and tradition of investigative reporting in Bangladesh.
