Creating and Using Credible Surveys for InvestigationsData
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room R25 (25)
Surveys can be an important journalistic tool, especially for beats where there is little or no data available. In this session, we’ll discuss how-to’s of using online surveys for your own investigations. We’ll cover the basics, including the planning, design, implementation, dissemination and evaluation of journalistic surveys.CORRECTIV has reported on several topics with the help of journalistic surveys: At the beginning of the Corona pandemic, we used surveys to report on the situation in women’s shelters, and more recently on barriers to abortion. We’ll talk about when (and when not) to use surveys, what to keep in mind when constructing questionnaires, and – from our own experiences – what can go wrong. We’ll also delve into how to find protagonists through surveys and how to reach your target groups. At the end, we will also share a few survey tools that journalists can use in their everyday work.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. That means people who arrive first will get seats. FOIA/RTI InvestigationsGeneral
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room H1 (250)
More than half of the world’s countries have laws that require officials to supply public documents on request. These laws offer valuable windows for reporters, even for those outside of a country's borders. But there are almost always tricks to targeting and expediting these disclosures, and this panel -- moderated by GIJN’s guide author on the subject -- brings deep experience in how to do that. Cooperative reporting efforts can be key. Be inspired by how reporters in Korea combined to obtain documents about public prosecutors. Hear how Brazilian reporters harvest data and make it widely available. The Swedish access law is the world’s oldest and we’ll learn about it from an expert journalist who runs a help line. And we’ll hear about the innovative US site MuckRock, which facilitates requests and runs document-based investigations.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. Watchdog reporting makes a critical contribution to society by exposing wrongdoing, fighting corruption, and promoting accountability. At a time of unprecedented attacks on the press, a broken financial model, and low public trust, it is critical to understand what impact means, why it matters, and how journalists can increase it. Learn from an expert in impact strategy and two senior journalists with broad experience in building audiences and ensuring that investigative stories make impact.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve.
