Tracking Assets Around the World (interpretation available)Business & Finance
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room G4 (300)
In this global economy, it's become easy to hide one's assets overseas, whether you're a Mexican crime boss or a Russian oligarch. Backgrounding an individual's holdings is essential, but ferreting out front companies, tax dodges, and hidden assets can be a tough undertaking. Here are two of the best at doing this.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. That means people who arrive first will get seats. Be aware that some sessions are in relatively small rooms and they will fill up quickly.Interpretation available in Armenian, Georgian, Romanian, Russian, Ukrainian.

Best Investigations on Russia’s War on UkraineGeneral
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room G3 (400)
The challenges for journalists covering Russia’s invasion of Ukraine are massive -- from the obvious dangers of reporting on the ground amid an armed conflict, to trying to investigate during a state of emergency, where disinformation is widespread and independent media is either banned or barely tolerated. In this panel, we bring together three senior journalists who have investigated the war on Ukraine. They will offer tips, tools, and advice on how to cover this ongoing conflict — but also what they have learned about integrating different investigative methods.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. Crowd-Driven Journalism: Using Communities to InvestigateGeneral
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room H1 (250)
One of the great spin-offs of the digital age is that journalists can tap into crowds and communities in ways unimaginable only a few years ago. Local communities are reporting impactful stories, providing tips and resources, and bolstering the finances of watchdog media around the world. Here are journalists from remarkably diverse environments -- Malaysia, Mexico, Germany, and the UK -- talking about how their newsrooms have integrated citizens and subscribers into their journalism, from the hyperlocal to the national. The stories are extraordinary, from supporting legal challenges to Malaysiakini to Quinto Elemento's documentation of the missing in Mexico's drug war.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. That means people who arrive first will get seats. Be aware that some sessions are in relatively small rooms and they will fill up quickly.

Migration & Human TraffickingGeneral
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room J1 (196)
With an estimated 257 million migrants in the world, migration has emerged as one of the most contentious national and international issues. At the same time, modern slavery is an evil hidden in plain sight, in a neighborhood massage parlor or aboard a fishing boat moored at a local dock. Our speakers bring an impressive range of experience: Jack Sapoch of Lighthouse Reports helped expose violence and official cover-ups along the EU's borders; Pari Saikia drew acclaim for her investigation into bride trafficking of Rohingya women, and has written about child trafficking in Delhi’s red light area and the disappearance of children from her native Assam state; and Paavo Teittinen's The Investigation Is Closed, on the abject failure of Finnish police on human trafficking, won the 2022 European Press Prize.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. That means people who arrive first will get seats. Be aware that some sessions are in relatively small rooms and they will fill up quickly.

Physical Security: Essential Tips for ProtectionSafety & Security
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room G2 (220)
Too much of the safety training offered to journalists is aimed at coping with conflict zones. A look at the data shows that more journalists are killed working on corruption and politics than in covering wars. And most victims of attacks are local reporters, not foreign correspondents. At the same time, the threat environment has grown, as we face increasingly brazen attacks by security forces, the targets of investigations, and proxy groups acting on behalf of crooks and autocrats. With that in mind, GIJN has asked two veteran investigative editors to conduct this workshop on physical safety -- with an emphasis on beat, watchdog reporting. Based on protocols developed by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, Stevan Dojcinovic and Drew Sullivan will share strategies to increase safety and mitigate the risk of vulnerability, surveillance, and injury.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. That means people who arrive first will get seats. Be aware that some sessions are in relatively small rooms and they will fill up quickly.
