But what are the downsides? When do you risk discrediting your work by misrepresenting yourself? In this session, come get tips and techniques from gutsy journalists who have gone undercover in some of the world's toughest environments.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. That means people who arrive first will get seats. Be aware that some sessions are in relatively small rooms and they will fill up quickly.

40 Years of Cross-Border Muckraking: Where It All BeganGeneral
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room H1 (250)
Today, we take for granted large-scale, collaborative cross-border investigative reporting. Not only at the global scale, but across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, networks of investigative journalists have made the extraordinary almost routine. But this relatively new field has deep roots, going back to a series of little-known meetings in the 1980s, and then to innovative models created in '90s. Come hear how early experiments by InterNation, CIR, GIJN, PCIJ, FarmSubsidy, and ICIJ laid the groundwork for the modern age of global muckraking. Here's a look at the predecessor of GIJN and ICIJ -- InterNation -- just published by GIJN.org.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. Fighting Back Against SLAPPs & Other Legal ThreatsSafety & Security
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room G3 (400)
Journalists are facing a worldwide legal assault from a growing arsenal of abused laws, from national security and emergency edicts to libel and privacy statutes. Harassment lawsuits, while always a threat, have mushroomed in use by the rich and powerful to silence watchdog reporting. SLAPP suits (“strategic lawsuits against public participation”), are one variant and are often framed as defamation or privacy cases, aimed to intimidate journalists, prevent publication, and punish independent media. The cost of defending such suits can be devastating to newsrooms. Legal experts who work closely with journalists will offer practical strategies on how journalists can be protected from defamation, libel and other vexatious lawsuits, including the welcome launch of Reporters Shield, a legal support program and defense fund.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. The Power of R: Overview and First Steps Data
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room R22+R23 (50)
Working in a spreadsheet can be messy and cluttered. Especially if you have a very large data set and need to perform many operations. You have to document every step to be able to repeat your analyses later (for verification or with new data). Fortunately, there's R. With a few simple lines of code, you can do the same things in R as you would in a spreadsheet: scrape, cleanup, sort, filter, group (pivot tables), create statistics and graphs, but now in an uncluttered workflow that can be easily modified, repeated, and shared. Experience why R (freeware) has quickly captured the hearts of many data journalists. A comprehensive workbook with sample scripts and exercises accompanies the workshops. (Some experience with spreadsheets is recommended for this workshop, but not required).🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. That means people who arrive first will get seats. Rewriting History: Investigations that Change Our Understanding of the PastGeneral
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room H1 (250)
The best historians and investigative journalists share a great deal: they go after primary sources, they follow the trails of money and accountability, and they put events in a broader context that the public can understand. Often those events look shockingly different just 20 or 30 years later, based on documents, data, and interviews. Here are three extraordinary examples of this unique kind of reporting. Jose Maria Irujo and his partner at El Pais followed the trail of Franco-era terrorists from Spain to Latin America, and revealed a shocking history that many in Spain would like to have forgotten. Catherine Porter and her team at the New York Times put together the troubling story of how France demanded reparations from newly independent Haiti, forcing the country into the worst poverty in the Western Hemisphere. And moderator Kunda Dixit will double as a speaker, giving us a look at his trilogy of photographic books revealing the full scope of Nepal's bloody civil war -- and the remarkable reaction they received by Nepalis nationwide.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve.
