Registered participants will be able to access the GIJC23 program on Sched, our conference app, in early September. You will receive the invitation from notifications@sched.com to login to Sched via the email you have provided during registration in Eventbrite. The Basics of Using RData
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room R22+R23 (50)
NOTE: Participating in the first part of this session, The Power of R, is strongly recommended.Working in a spreadsheet can be messy and cluttered. Especially if you have a very large data set and need to perform many operations. You have to document every step to be able to repeat your analyses later (for verification or with new data). Fortunately, there's R. With a few simple lines of code, you can do the same things in R as you would in a spreadsheet: scrape, cleanup, sort, filter, group (pivot tables), create statistics and graphs, but now in an uncluttered workflow that can be easily modified, repeated and shared. Experience why R (freeware) has quickly captured the hearts of many data journalists. A comprehensive workbook with sample scripts and exercises accompanies the workshops.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. That means people who arrive first will get seats. Be aware that some sessions are in relatively small rooms and they will fill up quickly.💻 For best results, be sure to bring your own laptop if you want to follow the workshop.

Investigating Social Media: Telegram, Twitter, & WhatsappTech

This workshop might just emerge as the one that changes your life as a watchdog journalist. At first glance, some platforms may seem impenetrable, while others are becoming harder to access. But there remain ways in -- and we'll show you how. This session features three of the world’s leading experts on how to dig deeply into this supposedly closed world – and to do it ethically, and without cost.🪑 All sessions are first-come, first-serve. Criminal States & Kleptocracies (interpretation available)Democracy
Venue: Svenska Mässan, Room H2 (300)

Kleptocracies -- government by theft -- now dominate in much of the developing world. Outright mafia states -- in which governments essentially operate the government as a criminal enterprise -- are growing in number.
